Description

The Salvation Army (Martinsville) is participating in United Way's Day of Action and could use some help. Volunteers will be are asked to help prepare a nutritious community meal to help serve their clients at their Day Center. For the Day of Action, Salvation Army's Day Center will provide all materials necessary for volunteers to cook (prepare) and serve the meal.

The Day Center is a community-based initiative designed to provide a safe, supportive space for individuals experiencing homelessness or hardship. Open Monday through Friday from 9 AM to 5 PM, the center offers access to essential services including showers, laundry, meals, case management, job readiness support, therapeutic activities, and resource navigation. The project aims to promote dignity, stability, and empowerment through a holistic, people-centered approach, connecting residents with the tools they need to restore, thrive, and achieve long-term success.

The Salvation Army is also seeking individuals who are available to volunteer year round with any of the following needs...

Inside Duties:

  • Greet and assist clients during open hours
  • Help serve meals and maintain cleanliness in the dining area
  • Organize and restock hygiene supplies and clothing closet
  • Assist with laundry/shower coordination and general facility upkeep
  • Support program staff during group activities and workshops
  • Provide light administrative help (sign-ins, resource handouts, etc.)

Outside Duties:

  • Maintain cleanliness and safety of entryways and surrounding areas
  • Water, weed, and care for the community garden beds
  • Assist with composting, planting, and seasonal upkeep of outdoor spaces
  • Keep grounds free of litter and report any maintenance needs
  • Support outdoor activities and garden-based programming
  • Volunteers are asked to provide the following where applicable:

For General Indoor Support:

  • Comfortable, modest clothing suitable for active movement
  • Closed-toe shoes
  • Personal water bottle
  • Apron (if serving meals)
  • Gloves (optional, or provided on-site)

For Meal Preparation & Service (if bringing or preparing food):

  • Pre-prepared meals (as coordinated with staff)
  • Disposable serving trays or containers
  • Utensils, napkins, disposable plates (if not provided by center)
  • Gloves and hair coverings (if preparing food on-site)

For Outdoor/Garden Support:

  • Gardening gloves
  • Work clothes or clothes that can get dirty
  • Sunscreen and hat (if volunteering outdoors)
  • Hand tools (if requested or not available on-site—trowel, hand rake, etc.)

For Programming/Activities Support:

  • Materials for scheduled arts, crafts, or games (if leading a session)
  • Printed worksheets or resources (if providing training or workshops)
  • Music, books, or props for interactive sessions (optional)
