Martinsville's own Blue Ridge Regional Library is participating in United Way's Day of Action and could use some help. Volunteers will be are asked to help clean and straighten bookshelves, toys, and tables in the Family Fun Zone of the library. 

Join Grace Network on Saturday, September 27 at First Baptist Church (23 Starling Ave.) to help set-up the annual Pumpkin Patch! Pumpkins will be delivered at 8:00 a.m. (tentative).

Volunteers are asked to help unload the pumpkins from the truck to the ground via an assembly line (fire-bucket brigade style).

This event is family-friendly and fun for all ages!

In general it will take approximately 2-3 hours to unload the truck.

Henry County Food Pantry is participating in United Way's Day of Action and has lot's of areas that could use some help.

Volunteers will be expected to help with one or more of the following areas:

Help make our community cleaner and greener by volunteering to pick up litter and beautify our neighborhoods. This is a great way to make a real difference!

The Piedmont Community Services is participating in United Way's Day of Action and could use some help. They need assistance with some property maintenance of their community recovery residences.

The Recovery Residences located on Starling are in desperate need of hedges trimmed and vines removed. It would be really nice to have pressure washing done on the brick siding of the homes and gutter cleanout. The women's home Serenity Cottage and men's home Passages are side by side on Starling Avenue. These homes service individuals with Substance Use Disorders who are turning their life around in receiving services from PCS as well as outside providers to become productive members of the community.

Beegins With You is participating in United Way's Day of Action and could use some help. Volunteers will be are asked to help transport items to be donated from Beegins With You to the Henry County Food Pantry. 

Volunteers are asked to meet at their main office (209 Starling Ave Martinsville, VA, 24112) to then organize, pack, load, and deliver pre-determined donations to the food pantry (3321 Fairystone Park Hwy) in Bassett, VA.

If volunteers are willing to utilize their vehicle (open-bed truck(s), or trailer preferred) to assist in the transportation and delivery of these goods, please notify Blake Shumate via phone or email. Alternative vehicles are welcome, but may increase the number of transport trips between locations.

Volunteers are asked to remain onsite at Henry County Food Pantry (3321 Fairystone Park Hwy) after delivering the goods to assist Food Pantry staff with organizing the donated goods.

Please note: these items will need to be moved up and down narrow stairs at the Starling Ave office space. This project will be labor intensive and not ideal for individuals with mobility concerns.

The Day Center is a community-based initiative designed to provide a safe, supportive space for individuals experiencing homelessness or hardship. Open Monday through Friday from 9 AM to 5 PM, the center offers access to essential services including showers, laundry, meals, case management, job readiness support, therapeutic activities, and resource navigation. The project aims to promote dignity, stability, and empowerment through a holistic, people-centered approach, connecting residents with the tools they need to restore, thrive, and achieve long-term success.

Tackfully Teamed Riding Academy serves individuals with disabilities, allowing them an opportunity to improve their physical, mental, emotional, and social lives through equine therapy and horse related activities.  We are seeking volunteers who can walk beside a horse during a lesson to act as a spotter, side-walker, or leader for special-needs riders. No previous experience with horses is needed. We provide all training at our center. 

Volunteers may also groom and tack horses, help with school and ground equine activities, help with fundraisers, clean tack, perform barn chores, assist administrative duties in the office, or help do arts and crafts with children in our classroom.

We do require an application and waiver to be filled out before participating. It can be filled out in person. But there is a LINK HERE to fill it out in advance.

We also welcome teams who want to come for the day or an afternoon to help with landscaping or repairs, interns in equine and health-science related educational programs, those who need community service hours, and veterans. 

Tackfully Teamed Riding Academy is in need of volunteers to help with routine landscaping  and grounds maintenance. This may include weed eating, fence repair, painting of outdoor structures, pasture maintenance, clearing trees from the trail system, maintaining the riding ring, and other grounds maintenance. 

Tackfully Teamed is an equine center that provides therapeutic horseback riding and other equine activities to individuals with disabilities, giving them an opportunity to improve their physical, mental, emotional, and social lives.

Every year, we provide free swim lessons to all 1st grade students in Martinsville City and Henry County Schools and it’s one of our favorite programs!

To help things run smoothly, we’re looking for 5–6 volunteers to assist during the week. It doesn’t have to be every day, but we ask that you’re available to help at least a few times during the week. The children come Monday - Friday throughout the school year from 12:45p - 2p.

United Way of Henry County & Martinsville is seeking a company sponsor to host an item drive on behalf of Boys & Girls Clubs of the Blue Ridge (BGCBR) to support club programs for the 2025-2026 school year. 

Volunteers will be needed during the Day of Action to help organize drive items for storage and distribution at the BGCBR site.

Volunteers will check IDs and the transaction for participants wanting to purchase a bracelet for alcoholic beverages. Provide runners with a refreshing post-race beverage at the finish line. Includes pouring beer into cups, distributing them to runners, and ensuring a fun, efficient, and safe environment. You’ll also check IDs to ensure compliance with legal drinking age requirements and help maintain cleanliness around the beer station. Friendly, upbeat energy and a focus on keeping the line moving smoothly will make you a key part of the runners' celebratory experience.

Are you passionate about the arts? Do you want to use your voice to advocate for Piedmont Arts and the arts in Martinsville-Henry County? Become a marketing volunteer and help spread the word about Piedmont Arts exhibits, events, and educational activities.  The time frame depends on when the event is happening.

Front desk volunteers provide invaluable assistance to Piedmont Arts staff, from answering phones to helping visitors to assisting with general office duties. Generally needed Tuesday through Friday from noon to 2:00pm. You can work one day a week, one day a month or a combination of days.

We are a hospice agency servicing Danville, Pittsylvania County and Henry County.  We are in need of Volunteers that are willing to donate a few hours of their time each week to help families during their most vulnerable time.   No medical training required. REACH (Regional Engagement to Advance Community Health) AmeriCorps, a program of the Institute for Advanced Learning and Research (IALR), is dedicated to expanding capacity for public health service by providing direct outreach and education services in the Dan River Region. Community health educators will provide individualized support, addressing the region’s most pressing physical and mental health challenges.

We are seeking community health educators to serve approximately 25 hours a week over 3 months in Danville, Pittsylvania County and Caswell County, N.C.

REACH AmeriCorps members will conduct workshops over 40 weeks in targeted census tracts in Danville City, Pittsylvania County and Caswell County. Workshops will be based on specific population health topics, addressing areas of high need and chronic health issues. Members will serve approximately 25 hours/week.

Now that the weather has warmed up and the MHC Warming Center has closed for the season, the need to support our homeless neighbors remains critical. Inspired by compassion and led by a desire to help, Nancy has launched a summer project to ensure our vulnerable community members have access to nourishing meals and essential supplies.

Beginning Sunday, April 27, 2025, Nancy will be organizing and distributing meals every Sunday and Thursday to those experiencing homelessness in our area.

Construction is underway on three houses in Habitat Village North (now known as England Trail).  This community of houses will offer low-to-moderate income families in Danville and Pittsylvania County a decent, safe and affordable place to live.

There is always a need for volunteers to assist with many different construction tasks from painting, installing interior trim, landscaping and just being available with a helping hand.

The ReStore is an extension of our Habitat for Humanity affiliate.  It is a thrift store where we sell donated items to the general public.  The funds generated through the sale of these items helps fund our organization and build decent, safe and affordable houses for those in need in the Danville Pittsylvania County area.

We are looking for volunteers that want to help our mission of building homes, communities and hope by assisting in the ReStore.  Duties to include assisting customers with their purchases.  Also, we have a box truck that picks up donations daily and we need folks that can help offload those donations into the ReStore.  Lastly, we look for someone that likes to work around good, caring people to help stock and rearrange our inventory.

Brain Injury Solutions (BIS) has created a new volunteer-based program: PALS--Providing a Link for Survivors.  PALS connects a brain injury survivor with a volunteer for socialization, community activities, and a supportive relationship!  Come make a new FRIEND!

Alzheimer's Association Community Educators are volunteer public speakers who provide Alzheimer's Association education programs to community audiences. 

The Alzheimer's Association will provide training, information and electronic or printed materials to assist in your efforts. CCPFC is seeking a talented volunteer or intern to organize and update the Resource Lending Library and assist in the transition to an electronic library management system. CCPFC’s Resource Lending Library offers a combination of educational resources, equipment and supplies for teachers and families in our community. Educational kits are age-appropriately themed and include books, games and toys that provide an interactive learning experience for children. Equipment includes a binding machine, laminators, copier and die cut machines. The Resource Lending Library also offers supplies such as construction paper, cardstock, and bulletin board paper. Items are arranged in the Resource Lending Library to assist teachers and families with choosing materials that are appropriate to the age of the child for which they are being selected.

House of Hope offers meals to our guests every evening at the shelter. Almost all of our food is donated by the community and we rely on our supporters to provide this essential need. Whether you're looking to make a difference in people's lives or have a group that wants to do some good - this is the opportunity for you. 

House of Hope's kitchen is small (a single stove and a pantry), so most of our Food Volunteers prepare food beforehand and bring it with them. The shelter has plates, cups, napkins, silverware, and serving utensils. You'll just need to bring the food! The amount of people staying each night varies, but a good number would be 10-12.

United Way has a program to help assist nonprofits with events, collecting supplies, or helping out in a crisis.  When we receive a request from a nonprofit, we send out an email to our Ambassadors to allow them to choose the project if they are available to help.  Our only requirement for being an Ambassador is that our United Way Ambassador t-shirt be worn when you are able to serve.  We will provide the shirt free of charge!

Our Community-Based Mentoring program matches our volunteers, Bigs, with children in the community, Littles, in which the Big and Little consistently meet at least 1 hour per week to spend time together. Matches are made with considerations to such things as geographic location, interests, activities, and personalities.

Spending time together is fun for both Bigs and Littles. It doesn't require a special occasion or expensive activities, just a few hours every month sharing simple things you already enjoy with a young person. Things like...
